What do you get when you cross a Movie Fanatic with an Accounting Major? I’ll tell you what, a highly detailed statistical analysis of last year’s theatrical releases!
I’ve always been a stats junkie, and recently I’ve started discovering the plethora of ways that Microsoft Excel can indulge my cravings for those juicy bits of compounded data that give a general picture of what the films of 2012 look like by the numbers.
Over the next week, I will be rolling out a series of posts based on my Master Spreadsheet I have assembled in my free time over the past few weeks. I will attach a copy of the actual spreadsheet to each post, but seeing as I’m guessing most of you will be bored to tears by all of those rows and columns I’ll also give a brief summary for each section. Here are the segments that I will be posting.
- Rotten Tomatoes Scores
- IMDb Ratings
- Runtime (Length)
- Domestic Box Office
- Net Profit (Loss) & % Return On Investment
- Stats by Genres
- Stats by Studio
I’ve pulled stats from all 137 films given wide theatrical releases in 2012 (wide defined as being shown in at least 600 theaters at some point in its theatrical run), and between IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and my personal go-to Box Office News headquarters Box Office Mojo I managed to fill in every blank to give you as complete of a picture as possible.
I’ll be starting with Rotten Tomatoes Scores and IMDb Ratings later tonight, so keep an eye out for that. I hope at least some of you out there might find something interesting here, so I’ll do my best to highlight the most interesting tidbits.
Movies for 2012 – The Master List
Above is a link to download the full spreadsheet itself, so feel free to take a look if you’re curious and let me know if everything works okay (I’ve never uploaded a Spreadsheet to here before after all).

This. Is. Beautiful.
lol, Dankeschön
Superb work there my friend! You’d get some people who would probably pay for that kind of stuff.
That’s more or less what I intend to do, lol. I’m planning on pursing a career in financial/data analysis for the film industry, so this is a small, broad taste of the kind of work I’m hoping to do.
Fascinating – thanks so much
You’re certainly welcome
This is awesome. My year end stuff is always so dorky and stat-heavy.. but it is all about just my own stats so it is completely irrelevant to everyone else, haha. I dig this kind of stuff for sure.
Great to hear it
I heavily encourage dorkiness, whether it’s your own stats or the world’s.
It absolutely pains me that so many of the worst movies of the year are amongst the ROI leaders…
Nice job, very geeky! I approve!
Thanks! Trust me, I’m in the same boat as far as profitability in hollywood goes but I’ll get into that in my profitability post
Sounds good, love me some stats
